THE GRIT FACTOR IN CHESS: PART 1

GM LEVON ARONIAN: Amidst aggression and the brink of defeat, a mindset of grit speaks volumes on its own.

17/September 2024/ Watching grandmasters perform at their best is expected, but observing them excel in challenging positions is remarkable. The resilience shown in the face of adversity, often necessary to surpass human limitations, is what we refer to as genius moves.

The 2nd featured game: In my opinion, Super GM Vachier-Lagrave is the most entertaining grandmaster. The courage and grit he displays by leaving his mighty king uncastled in perilous situations is unparalleled. Yet, the depths of Super GM Vachier-Lagrave’s genius mind, especially when he is deeply engaged in a combative mood, remain a mystery.

04/August 2024/ Defeating your future boss may not be an easy feeling but impressing him is certainly the better approach. I’m grateful to FM Chris Depasquale and Boss David Cordover for all the opportunities. May God bless you both with peace, good health, and prosperity.

The 2nd featured game: Some games are memorable because of the quality of play, the execution, and the overcoming of fear against much stronger opponents. In this featured game, I played against the formidable and respected IM Richard Bitoon. He has since become a fully-fledged GM and is now settled in the USA.

FM JESSE NOEL SALES: “Your biggest fear is also your biggest opportunity for growth.”

July 3, 2024: Playing against IM Igor Bjelobrk is always a formidable challenge. His expert grasp of chess opening theory and extensive tournament experience make him a formidable opponent. Thus, a gesture to play solid and not to overextend to make sure it is safe in all aspects of the game.

The 2nd featured game: I selected this featured game because the late IM Senador defeated me in several tournaments. My goal is to instruct players, from beginners to experts, on how to manage their fear when facing stronger opponents.

GM Vladimir Kramnik: Know yourself first and your opponent, and you will conquer many battles.

28/May 2024/ It’s clear that World Champion Kramnik possesses great confidence when playing with the white pieces. The key to victory lies in the preparation and analysis of an opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. Developing a study method or system is essential for mastering chess opening theories.

The 2nd featured game: World Champion Garry Kasparov was always skilled with both white and black pieces. However, in my view, his black repertoire, including the King’s Indian and Sicilian Najdorf, was particularly formidable during his era and made a significant contribution to the game.

IM SHARMA DUSHANT: Courage arises in those who seek victory.

02/April 2024/ IM Dushyant’s victory was remarkable, showcasing his tenacity and strategic prowess. Defeating a Super Grandmaster is like winning the lottery—an incredible achievement indeed.

The 2nd featured game: I never imagined it would come to this final position where both the king and queen are in jeopardy. I’m somewhat convinced that the reason white couldn’t castle was due to unnecessary piece movements that delayed the king’s safety, which is castling. I hope you enjoyed this game. Have a nice day.
